Data sources and methodology

This site presents statistics compiled from the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) medical facility registration data. It is not a directory of medical facilities and it does not give medical advice.

Data source

Original dataset: https://data.gov.tw/dataset/15393 (Taiwan open data portal, data.gov.tw). Snapshot file: 醫療機構與人員基本資料_20251231.ods (file name in Chinese). Snapshot date: 2025-12-31.

Population source: Ministry of the Interior, Department of Household Registration, land area and population density by county and township, end of 2025 (ROC year 114).

Deduplication

Records are deduplicated on the facility code: drop_duplicates(機構代碼) (keep one row per facility code).

Facility type classification

The first two digits of the facility code decide the type: 35 = Western medicine clinic, 37 = dental clinic, 38 = TCM clinic. Remaining facilities whose name contains the Chinese word for hospital (醫院) are classified as hospitals.

Difference from the MOHW yearbook

The MOHW 2025 yearbook reports 12,688 Western medicine clinics, 7,128 dental clinics and 4,270 TCM clinics (source, in Chinese). Figures on this site are re-aggregated from facility-level registration records, and the reference date differs from the yearbook's publication date, so small differences between the two are expected. They do not indicate an error in either.

Township page threshold

A township gets its own page only if page_facts >= 3 or total facilities >= 5; otherwise it is listed in the table on its county page. Township and county pages are available in Chinese only.

Openings and closures: comparison window

2024-12-31 to 2025-12-31. Facilities with the same name and address are treated as the same facility, even if the facility code changed for administrative reasons; these are not counted as openings or closures.

Specialty counts

The count for a specialty is the number of clinics registered under it. A clinic registered under several specialties is counted once in each, so specialty counts add up to more than the number of clinics.

Update process

A scheduled job checks the MOHW Department of Medical Affairs page for a new snapshot link every month. When a new file name is detected, a tracking issue is opened; the site data is regenerated only after manual confirmation, and existing pages are never overwritten automatically.
